CSI alum programmers behind Eastern Promises

March 26, 2026 by Denise Ing

On Friday, March 27, Eastern Promises presents Permanent Tourist at the Paradise Theatre, the debut feature of Canadian filmmaker, Alex Lo. It is the first in a slate of screenings that will include:

Thu Apr 23rd - NACHO LIBRE (dir. Jared Hess)

Sun May 31st - SANSHO THE BAILIFF (dir. Kenji Mizoguchi)

Sat June 13th - THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT (dir. Justin Lin)

Thu June 25th - HE’S A WOMAN, SHE’S A MAN (dir. Peter Chan)

Thu July 30th - TO LIVE (dir. Zhang Yimou)

Eastern Promises is dedicated to showcasing the best of East Asian cinemas, from beloved classics to hidden gems. Eastern Yoo and Thomas Chan cast a wide net with their programming, often juxtaposing core films of the East Asian canon with off-kilter picks that seek to expand and explode what is considered to be canon. Ultimately, their core mandate is to “promise” the viewer a good time.

Eastern Promises was started in 2017 by Cinema Studies Institute alumnus, Eastern Yoo as a monthly series focused on East Asian cinema at the Royal Cinema in Toronto. Having taken a pause at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the screening series was revived at the Paradise Theatre in collaboration with fellow CSI alumnus, Thom Chan.
