Through film and video games, Theo Cuthand explores Indigenous identity, resistance and lived experiences

Theo Cuthand is an accomplished storyteller who uses multiple mediums to entertain as well as inform audiences about the nuances of Indigenous identity.

A member of Saskatchewan’s Little Pine First Nation, he’s a multi-faceted artist known for his short films, video game design and writing. He recently joined the Faculty of Arts & Science’s Cinema Studies Institute and was named the 2025/26 Artist-in-Residence at the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies.

Cuthand, who identifies as an Indigiqueer trans man, has been making short experimental narrative videos and films about sexuality, queer identity and love, and Indigenous identity since 1995. His work has been screened at festivals throughout North America, Europe and South America.

“Each video has its own thing — they are about relationships, or being Indigenous, or being Indigenous and queer, or being trans,” he says. “I haven't made a lot of work about being trans yet. There are also things that affect the community, such as colonization and resource extraction.
