Description
We are excited to have Kanika Lawton present a chapter for our next Critical Function workshop, on Monday Oct. 6th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Innis 223E.
Kanika is presenting a chapter from their dissertation called "Ontological Collapse: On the Duration of Anti-Blackness." The chapter looks at George Holliday’s camcorder videotape of Rodney King’s beating, Darnella Frazier’s cellphone video of George Floyd’s murder by Derek Chauvin, and Claudia Rankine and John Lucas’s Situation 11, a video essay in response to, while also incorporating, Christian Cooper’s cellphone video of Amy Cooper calling 911 on him during the Central Park birdwatching incident, to argue that there is a relationship between the “ontological collapse” experienced by white perpetuators of anti-black violence and the durational quality of anti-blackness as captured on video.
Professor æryka jourdaine hollis o’neil will be the respondent. Coffee and treats will be served!
Please RSVP here to receive a link to the paper (you can download it from there).
