Description

The Cinema Studies Student Union (CINSSU) have planned a program of Free Friday Films over the summer, though not all of the films will screen on a Friday.

Joyous and heartwrenching, the musical Sarafina! follows a young student living in Soweto, South Africa, who dreams of becoming a movie star.

Amidst the chaos and violence of life under the Apartheid government, students decide to fight back and protest against the oppressive Bantu education system. Based on the events of the Soweto Uprisings on June 16, 1976, now known as Youth Day, it commemorates the students and children who were involved in the protest and killed during the massacre, a pivotal event in the anti-Apartheid struggle.

This year marks the 30th-anniversary of the film's release, premiering in 1992 at the Cannes Film Festival. CINSSU is proud to present Sarafina! on a 35mm original print from 1992.

Join us for the free screening on Thursday, June 16 at 7pm at Innis Town Hall.
