Description

CALLING ALL SPORTS FANS!!!

On Wednesday Nov 1st, 7pm, CINNSU is proud to present Portraits and Passports, graduate seminar hosted by PhD candidate Daniele Iannucci.

From video games to trading cards, portrait photos of athlete’s face and upper torso are found everywhere in the current sports-media landscape. Daniele will coach us on this seeming modern phenomenon’s importance in structuring notions of race, ethnicity, national belonging, and population governance, tracing back to the late 19th century. So join us on Wednesday Nov 1st at 7pm in Innis College Room IN-222 Deluxe Screening Room for an evening of sports talks. Refreshments will be provided for all who attend.

Daniele Iannucci is a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto's Cinema Studies Institute. His dissertation project, Portraits and Passports: Sports Media Technologies, World Football, and International Surveillance examines soccer player profile pictures as convergent identity documents found across print cultures, television, video games, and social media platforms. His most recent work on the FIFA videogame series (EA Sports FC) can be found in the edited collection, States of Immersion: Bodies, Media, Technology, due for release in December of 2023. In addition to studies in sports and media, Daniele's other research interests include infomercials, prank calls, and audio verité recordings.
