June 20, 2023 by Denise Ing

Cinema Studies Institute alumna, Riel Flack has won first place in the 2022/23 competition of the TVO Today Short Doc Contest. Her film, They Can't. So I Must: The Orlando Bowen Story impressed the jury and won the People's Choice Award for highest number of online votes during a three-week period.

Riel's powerful short documentary shines a light on Orlando Bowen whose CFL career was cut short by police abuse and on anti-black racism in Canada.

Riel graduated with a Cinema Studies Major in 2020.
