June 20, 2022 by James Leo Cahill

CSI doctoral student, Ruochen Bo has been selected for a Hou Family Predoctoral Fellowship at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University.

As a fellow, Ruochen will be working on her thesis “Edward Yang and Aesthetic Education.” Ruochen herself describes her thesis as "examining the entirety of Edward Yang’s cinematic corpus in relation to philosophical concerns regarding aesthetic and ethical education. This project seeks to demonstrate his works’ significance for not only historical and political discourses on the modern Taiwanese social milieu but also the field of film-philosophy, which explores the ways in which films, in a manner specific to their medium, develop and contribute to fundamental philosophical questions."

Congratulations are also due to her thesis supervisor Brian Price and her thesis committee.

If you want to know more about the great Taiwanese filmmaker Edward Yang and a sense of why Ruochen's work is so exciting, do not miss CINSSU's special screening of Yang's A Brighter Summer Day this Friday in Innis Town Hall.
