Congratulations to Elizabeth Wijaya and Weijie Lai for their continuing success in film production. Mongrel won the Camera d’Or Special Distinction at Cannes and received a lot of positive coverage in the international press. From Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian: “Zen-like tale of compassion and suffering among migrant care workers…Close attention is required for this sombre but impressive Taiwanese feature debut about exploited illegal staff, and their patients and gangmasters.” And from Stephanie Bunbury in Deadline: “There is a sense after seeing it… of having encountered greatness. That is a rarity, even in Cannes.” Focus Taiwan CNA English News reported that Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture “expressed congratulations on the movie’s recognition at Cannes, saying that along with other films, it showcased the talents of Taiwanese filmmakers.” We look forward to seeing the film at some point here!
